What a great day last Sunday! … Sitting on the top deck of the Gold Coast’s beautiful Currumbin Surf Club with the competitors in the inaugural Manufacturer’s Cup surfing contest on a big bank right in front. I had a nice high chair with my 600mm and D3s on the tripod and thoroughly enjoyed catching the action in real comfort rather than rushing round the beach with 30kg of gear as is my norm! … AND as a bonus I also managed to snap some frames with my new Nikon 1 V2, what an amazing piece of technology.
Some of the countries best professional iron men and women had a surf off for the unofficial World crown, and more to the point bragging rights for twelve months!
Top accolades for the day went to the master himself Trevor Hendy, none of the younger competitors minded one bit at being outshone by a legend, barrel after barrel made sure Trev would take the crown.
With the sisters of surf Tiarne and Kristyl Smith head to head in the women’s event it would have been a brave if not silly option not to back them as a one two finish and that is exactly what the result board was to show. Sisters versus sisters as Bonnie and Courtz Hancock tried in vain to neutralise the surf skills of the Smithies but with Kristyl in the barrel several times and surfer extraordinaire Tiarne shredding every wave she got the result was not hard to pick. Tiarne Smith taking the title, Kristyl second, and a strong third place finish to Bonnie Hancock (should have hung on to the board more often Bonz!)
Congratulations to organiser Brett Dowker, great concept, great event. Thanks to the competitors and can’t wait for next year.
