Nutri-Grain Ironman, Newcastle Beach

It was Round 3 & 4 of the Kelloggs Nutri-Grain Surf Ironman Series at Newcastle Beach. On Friday the beach and its surf was still and calm. So I had planned to getting out in the water and taking out the Nikon 1 AW1 or my Nikon 1 J2 in its WP-N1 Water Housing to get some close-up images from the water level. But the wind picked up that night, and on Saturday was howling in and whipping up the surf. It was sloppy and coming in from all directions. Dangerous conditions for mere mortals like myself. So I abandoned getting wet and disappearing in a rip ‘Harold Holt’ style, and brought out the big boy 600mm lens to record the chaos of both days from the safety of the sand.

Sport is all about action and storytelling. So my photo-vision that day was to record just how well these experienced lifesavers handle nature’s waves that are thrown at them. No matter how wild the surf is.

So I shot it bold and hard and tight. That’s exactly how these athletes competed and took on the conditions and racing. I was trying to reflect that chaos just by shortening the perspective. No need for art that day. The 600mm f4 lens was the perfect lens that day. That’s what successful sports photography is all about. A photographer’s vision and using the right tools for the job.
