Monty Coles at the Melbourne Cup

Public events bring big crowds, and with that come great photographic opportunities. Fashion photographer Monty Coles mingled among this year’s Melbourne Cup crowd to capture the colours and energy of race and its spectators.

More than 110,000 revellers turned out for 150th edition of the ‘race that stops the nation’. The rain came bucketing down, umbrellas went up and Monty used the situation to his advantage to take some stunning shots.

“I could not have planned it better! I went inside for shelter and found all the ‘Fashions on the Field’ contestants in a holding pattern. It was a great concentration of the colours, excitement and spectacular outfits”
But what’s a bit of rain when you’re part of the nation’s favourite horse race? Once the rain stopped, the crowd dispersed around the track and the party continued.

This year’s winner ‘Americain’ took home the $3.5 million Melbourne Cup first prize followed by ‘Maluckyday’ and ‘So You Think’ coming in 2nd and 3rd. In total, 22 horses finished the race this year.

Monty’s tip, however, for those eager snappers who are keen to test their skills under tough weather conditions is to: “buy a protective cover for your camera so you can keep on capturing great shots.”
