Delly Carr honoured with triathlon lifetime Service to Sport Award

Australia’s preeminent sport specialist photographer, Delly Carr has been awarded the prestigious ‘Service to Sport’ Award at the Triathlon Australia Celebration of Champions Annual Awards Dinner on the Gold Coast overnight.

His 30 years of photographing the sport of Triathlon in Australia and worldwide has gained him adulation and honour never before bestowed to any Sports Photographer.

“Triathlon photography has shaped and defined my life. It truly has. I have dedicated a large portion of my life to being there at all levels from the sport’s birth to its growth into a mature Olympic sport and entity. Now being recognised with this distinction for something I truly love has me emotional and speechless.”

“I have roughly calculated averages and added days together and estimate that I have spent approximately 6 actual years of my life committed to being at a Triathlon,” Delly said.

Triathlon Australia’s President Ben Houston summed it up perfectly, “Delly’s contribution to the triathlon industry in Australia and globally for the past 30 years as the leading triathlon photographer has left an indelible mark in capturing our moments, he has forged a legacy for which our sport is deeply thankful for.

His passion for triathlon in all forms and dedication to shaping and documenting our history is unsurpassed – capturing all that is great about our sport through his eyes and lens, he is held in the highest regard.”

Delly thanked the expert panel for their nomination and faith in presenting him with this unprecedented accolade.

He was also full of praise and gratitude to the International Triathlon Union and Triathlon Australia, who took the leap of faith and vision in appointing him as their Official Photographer all those years ago. Delly was asked not only to document the sport, but to tell the stories that needed to be told with his camera.

“They placed their trust in me and my first foray into photographing Triathlon, allowing my photography and creativity to flow unbridled and unrestricted. That trust still exists today, 30 years later,” Delly said.

“I have seen the sport grow from a fitness pastime to a major entity within the Olympic world. I have photographed triathletes from their first steps in junior years to the day they won their Olympic Medals. I have travelled around the world, enjoyed experiences I never dreamed of, and made lifelong friends.”

“This lifetime commitment to Triathlon just adds so much more gilt to what I love doing the most, Sports Photography.”

“I have won multiple Awards over my 30 years of photography, but this honour ranks right up there at the top of my achievements.”

Inspired by the recognition of his work the Award has further fuelled Delly’s passion, and reaffirmed his commitment to photograph the sport of Triathlon to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and beyond.
