Nikon-Walkley Press Photo of the Year
Winner: Barat Ali Batoor, The Global Mail, “The first day at sea”
Barat Ali Batoor has a unique perspective on the asylum seeker experience, having chronicled the plight of the Hazaras people since 2005, then fleeing Kabul for his life in 2012.
The judges consider this “world-class work, testament to the power and lasting impression of still photography”. Barat Ali Batoor’s first hand account of the dangerous journey across Asia then to Australia by sea gives us access to the grim reality and human cost of the refugee problem.

Nikon-Walkley Prize Winners
Nikon-Walkley Portrait Prize
Winner: Brendan Esposito, Fairfax Media, “Dini Coral”
Dini Coral, of Kundiawa Simbu Province in Papua New Guinea, stands with her husband to show the scars from a brutal attack on her by her own brother’s sons, who accused her of being a witch.
Judges commented on “the defiance and vulnerability of the subject, and how the stark simplicity of the image portrays a highly complex and confronting social dynamic.”
Brendan will receive the prize of $3,000 worth of Nikon equipment.
Nikon-Walkley Community/Regional Prize
Winner: Marc McCormack, The Cairns Post, “Pictures from The Cairns Post”
Local zoos provide a great opportunity to capture new born animals, and this two-day-old Krefft’s Turtle, no bigger than a 50 cent piece, proved to be a natural in front of the camera.
The Judges recognised Marc’s ability “to turn everyday assignments into something special”, and his ability to bring life and humour to his photography.
Marc will receive the prize of $3,000 worth of Nikon equipment.
