Features List

Waterproof and Dustproof

The waterproof construction lets you point and shoot at depths down to 15 m (49 ft)* using its dedicated lenses. O-rings and seals installed at critical locations also function to keep dust and sand out of the camera and lenses.

Shockproof

With the ability to withstand drops of up to 2 m (6.6 ft)* and still come up shooting, you can sling the camera over your shoulder and be assured of recording all the action wherever you go.

Note: Shockproof performance capabilities of the camera body do not apply to the pop-up flash.

Freezeproof

Capable of normal digital and mechanical operation at sub-freezing temperatures of -10 °C (14 °F), Nikon 1 AW1 offers the means to enjoy extreme winter sports and share all the thrills afterwards.

Advanced hybrid AF system

Nikon 1 AW1 employs an advanced hybrid autofocus system, which automatically selects the appropriate autofocus method depending on the scene.

High-speed continuous shooting

Working in tandem with phase-detection AF, this mode delivers 15 perfectly focused frames per second of even moving subjects – the ideal solution for shooting fast-breaking action such as sports and wildlife photos.

Intuitive Features

Slow view

Knowing just when to take the shot while trying to capture fast-moving action can sometimes be difficult. Slow view solves this problem. Simply press the shutter-release button halfway and Nikon 1 AW1 records up to 20 frames in just over a second. Then, pick and choose the best shot from this slow-motion sequence.

Smart Photo Selector

The Smart Photo Selector mode allows your Nikon 1 AW1 to record up to 20 images and will automatically save the five most pleasing shots. Unneeded images are deleted for you. No more worries about missing a great shot due to people blinking, falling out of the frame or blur caused by a shaky hand.

Motion Snapshot

Shooting with Motion Snapshot appends four seconds of slow-motion video and selectable music to a normal snapshot. Just point and shoot. Motion Snapshots are created in-camera so no special editing skills or software are required and are ready to be enjoyed immediately.

HD movies with advanced movie mode

Creators of short videos will appreciate the versatility of Nikon 1 AW1. Just enable Advanced movie mode and you’ll have access to programmed auto, shutter-priority auto, aperture-priority auto and manual settings, giving you the freedom to add a cinematic feel to special moments.

Waterproof and shockproof 1 NIKKOR lenses

A ruggedly stylish camera deserves an equally rugged lens. Nikon gives you two: The 1 NIKKOR AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens and 1 NIKKOR AW 10mm f/2.8 single focal length lens. Both are shockproof from drops as high as 2 m (6.6 ft)** and feature waterproof performance down to 15 m (49 ft)† for the zoom lens and 20 m (65.6 ft)† for the single focal length lens.

Note: Waterproof performance is 15 m (49 ft) when 1 NIKKOR AW 10mm f/2.8 is attached to Nikon 1 AW1.

* In-house tests have demonstrated JIS/IEC Class 8 (IPX8) waterproof performance, with special-purpose waterproof lens attached.
† Has passed in-house tests to MIL-STD 810F Method 516.5: Shock standard, with special-purpose waterproof lens attached.
** Has passed in-house tests to MIL-STD 810F Method 516.5: Shock standard when attached to the waterproof camera.

Reviews

The Queensland Times

This is one super cool and fun camera. As expected, the AW1 takes great underwater photos and video. But it’s the freedom it gives you that makes it special. One of the clever features is that you can change settings by holding down a menu button and tilting the camera – which is particularly handy if you are in or under the water. Click here to read the full review

TechLife Australia (Jan 2014)

4.5/5 stars.
The AW1 is a true adventurer’s camera…..in our eyes, it’s probably one of the most exciting cameras to come to the market in 2013.

AG Outdoor (Jan 2014)

With its water/dust/shock/freeze proofing and interchangeable waterproof lenses – plus excellent sensor – the Nikon 1 AW1 has definitely raised the bar in the adventure camera market.

Testimonials

Nikon Ambassador, Mark Watson is a full time professional adventure sports photographer with a client list that includes Red Bull, Oakley, Speedo, Land Rover and The North Face.

“I am often sent to the most obscure places to photograph extreme sportsmen climbing vertical cliff faces or hurling themselves off massive hanging ice seracs. What you don’t see in my photos is where I have to be positioned to get the shot.

My body and my camera get thrown around a lot as I try to keep up with every step they take.

The Nikon 1 has become my little pocket-rocket. The Nikon 1’s autofocus is out-of-control and its super-fast continuous shooting is phenomenal! Combine that speed and autofocus in a tough body and I may have just found a new partner to my DSLR’s.”

Internationally renowned Adventure, Surf, Action, Fashion & Travel photographer Ted Grambeau has travelled the world documenting the waves:

“I’m pretty excited by the prospect of a high quality water proof compact digital camera that truly integrates in to a photographic system. Having the ability to go in the water with waterproof lenses as well as adapt to an existing range of my professional lenses makes this possibly the most versatile camera ever produced.

Superfast frame rates in stills, extreme slow motion video, edge to edge autofocusing and the ability to convert lenses to super telephotos; it’s the perfect compliment to my existing professional system.”

Surfing Australia Digital Content Manager Mick Wilcomes has diverse experience within the surfing and outdoor sports worlds, from travelling the globe with Quiksilver to shooting in the pits of the 2011/12 V8 Supercar Series throughout Australia. Mick sees the Nikon 1 AW1 as a game changer across his areas of passion:

“The Nikon 1 is set to change our workflow forever,”said Wilcomes. “To be able to have complete access to the unique features on the Nikon 1 such as Full HD video and full resolution photos simultaneously or the lightning fast autofocus speed, whether you’re in the water, filming an interview or attaching it to a long lens and then strapping the same camera to a RC Helicopter utilising all of our Nikon lenses in a heartbeat and with zero setup time is a game changer. The mind boggles on how we can push this camera.”

Five-time ASP Women’s World Champion surfer Stephanie Gilmore loves nothing more than snapping on the surf, and is excited as to how this hybrid camera will fit seamlessly into her lifestyle:

“My passion for photography formed after a few years travelling the world on the ASP Tour and surf trips,” says Gilmore. “My two favourite cameras are the COOLPIX AW110 and the Nikon 1 because I like to travel light. The COOLPIX AW110 is my ‘go anywhere’ camera, often joining me on a wave or being thrown around in my beach bag; and my Nikon 1 allows me to experiment with different ways of capturing the beauty of the people and places I visit on my travels. Combining my two favourite cameras into one is so exciting, especially for my adventurous lifestyle.”
