AFS 300mm 4E PF

AF-S 300mm f/4E PF ED VR

Overview

FX-format compatible, prime telephoto lens with 300 mm* focal length and f/4 maximum aperture

With its compact and light design as well as high optical performance, this telephoto lens is ideal for capturing a wide range of scenes such as sports, wildlife, landscapes, portraits, and more.

* When attached to a DX-format SLR, the angle of view is equivalent to that of a lens with a focal length of 450 mm in FX/35mm format.

Notes on use with a teleconverter

The following teleconverters are compatible with this lens:
AF-S Teleconverters TC-14E III/TC-17E II*/TC-20E III*

* Autofocus is available only with single-servo AF (AF-S) and then only when the lens is mounted on a camera that supports f/8.

PF (Phase Fresnel) lens for a compact and light body

Employing a PF (Phase Fresnel) lens, a first for a NIKKOR lens, an outstandingly compact and light body is realised. Compared to the current AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED, weight is reduced by approx. 545 g, length by approx. 75 mm and diameter by approx. 1 mm.

Vibration Reduction (VR) with an effect of 4.5 stops

Image blur caused by camera shake is effectively reduced by the built-in Vibration Reduction function that provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4.5 stops faster (in NORMAL mode; based on CIPA Standard*). SPORT mode, particularly effective when shooting sports, for example, in which subjects are radically moving, is adopted following the AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR.

* When attached to an FX-format digital SLR camera.

High optical performance

Employing a PF (Phase Fresnel) lens element and an ED glass element, plus Nano Crystal Coat, superior optical performance with minimised chromatic aberration and ghost effect is achieved.

Photographic expression utilising the f/4 maximum aperture is enabled

Beautifully blurred pictures that cannot be attained with zoom lenses can be taken. The range of shooting applications is extended to dark scenes such as at sunset and dawn. Pictures that retain high image quality can be captured even in dark interiors

Electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism is adopted

A diaphragm blade unit with drive mechanism is incorporated in the lens barrel, enabling diaphragm control via electric signals from the camera body. This ensures stable auto-exposure control even during high-speed continuous shooting.

Fluorine coat is applied to the lens front

Effectively repels dust, water droplets, grease or dirt, ensuring easy removal even if they adhere to the lens surface.

About the PF (Phase Fresnel) lens

The PF (Phase Fresnel) lens, developed by Nikon, effectively compensates chromatic aberration utilising the photo diffraction phenomenon*. It provides superior chromatic aberration compensation performance when combined with a normal glass lens. Compared to many general camera lenses that employ an optical system using the photorefractive phenomenon, a remarkably compact and lightweight body can be attained with less number of lens elements.
A general interchangeable lens forms an image on an imaging plane, using the photorefractive phenomenon. The degree of light refraction differs depending on the colour (wavelength), and image formation is performed in the order of blue (B), green (G), and red (R) starting with the portion near the lens (see the diagram below). The colour deviation referred to as chromatic aberration induces colour bleeding, resulting in a deterioration of observed or captured images.
With PF (Phase Fresnel) lenses, on the other hand, image formation is performed in the order of red (R), green (G), and blue (B) starting with the portion near the lens (see the diagram below). By combining the PF (Phase Fresnel) lens with a refractive lens, chromatic aberration can be effectively compensated.

* Diffraction phenomenon: Light has characteristics as a waveform. When a waveform faces an obstacle, it attempts to go around and behind it, and this characteristic is referred to as diffraction. Diffraction causes chromatic dispersion in the reverse order of refraction.

Note: Due to the characteristics of a PF (Phase Fresnel) lens that utilises the photo diffraction phenomenon, when there is a strong light source within the frame or when light enters the lens from outside of the frame, ring-shaped coloured flare may occur according to shooting conditions. This phenomenon can be minimised with “PF Flare Control” included in Capture NX-D. See the comparison images below: original image (above), PF Flare Control applied (below). Refer to the software manual for more information. Capture NX-D is available from our website. Please download and use the latest version.
