“I have spent the last 30 years as a full time sports photographer.

I am extremely pleased to have been given the prestige of being appointed the Sports Photography Ambassador for Nikon Australia in 2009, and also formally inducted as a founding member of the World Photography Academy in 2008.

My agency Sportshoot was founded in 1987. I consider myself privileged to have photographed every Summer Olympic Games since 1996, every Commonwealth Games since 1994, the Football World Cup in 2006 and 2010, and more recently, the Winter Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games in 2018. I have photographed an unprecetended Nine Olympic Games, yet I am best known for my work in Swimming and Triathlon.

I have also been exclusively commissioned as Official Photographer to photograph sporting events for clients such as Swimming Australia, Triathlon Australia, Rowing Australia, the NSW Mens and Womens Cricket Team, Canoe/Kayak Australia, the ITU World Championship Triathlon Series, the Sydney Running Festival, the Kelloggs NutriGrain Surf Ironman, the Rugby World Cup Organising Committee, the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour, AIS, Surf Lifesaving Australia, Cycling Australia, Hockey Australia & the Bahrain Endurance Team.

My current work has been featured prominently in promotional campaigns for companies as diverse as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Organising Committee, Elastoplast, Casio GShock, Rebel Sports, Oakley, Gatorade, Kelloggs, Asics, Nikon, Speedo, Foxsports, Red Bull, Vodafone, Sydney Olympic Park and the Bradman Foundation. My first paid photography job was with The Australian Bicentennial Authority. They asked me to photograph most sport events that came under their funding and sponsorship in 1988. The first cheque was small, but I still have it framed in my office.

It took many years of freelancing part-time and knocking on many doors before the courage was there to make the jump. So when the company I was working for at the time handed out some voluntary retrenchment packages, I was one of the first to sign up and leave the corporate world to chase my lifelong dream to be a full-time sports photographer. That was 30 years ago.

At the moment my D5 and the D850 are my favourite pieces of Nikon equipment. By a mile. I have said it before, Nikon cameras are light years ahead of anything else that exist in the digital world. Their colour resolution and low light performance as a digital camera is outstanding. The D850’s files have to be seen to be believed. So as a sports photographer I now have the tools to do the job, and therefore the success in getting an image lies solely with me and not how the camera is able to cope with the circumstances thrown at it.

My AF-S NIKKOR 180-400 mm f/4E is my favourite lens. We became buddies in early 2018 and she is now my sports photography best friend. I have put her through the rigours of sport, and she hasn’t failed me once. As sharp and solid as the day she landed in my hands. The perfect lens for the sports that I shoot constantly. If it could have a beer with me at the end of a long hard day it would.”
