The winners of the 2011 Nikon-Walkley Press Photo Awards were announced in Brisbane last night.
The annual Walkleys gala dinner was held for the first time in many years in Brisbane, in the Plaza Ballroom at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
Phil Hillyard took out the prestigious Nikon-Walkley Press Photographer of the Year award. The judges commented “Knockout sporting images, action shots and formal portraits – and a stunning image of a seagull snatching a chip – show an eye that is always ready to snap the unexpected fleeting moment.”
In addition to his new Walkley trophy, Phil also takes home a new Nikon D3S, AF-S 24-70mm and AF-S 70-200mm Pro Kit.

Also announced last night were the winners of the following categories:
- Daily Life/Feature Photography – Stuart McEvoy
- Sport Photography – Adam Pretty
- Photographic Essay – Glenn Campbell
- General News Photography – Neville Madsen
As previously announced on My Nikon Life, Brian Cassey won the 2011 Nikon-Walkley Best Portrait Prize and Neville Madsen won the 2011 Nikon-Walkley Community/Regional Prize. Brian and Neville each received a Nikon D700 and an AF-S 85mm F1.4 lens.
In addition to winning the above-mentioned prize, Neville Madsen also received a Walkley for his entry in the News category, which is tremendous recognition for his work in a regional publication.
